Burlington Arcade > Division 1

Issue number 71 of Tallis's 'London street views' showing Burlington Arcade, which opened on 20th March 1819. Designed by Samuel Ware for Lord George Cavendish, it is said that one reason for building the arcade was to prevent passers-by from throwing their rubbish into the gardens of Burlington House, where Lord Cavendish lived. Originally there were 47 leaseholders, living in fairly cramped conditions above and below their shops. The original arcade has undergone alterations over time, including being raised by a storey in 1911.
